Dr. Juan Acuña is an obstetrician-gynecologist, clinical geneticist, fetal medicine specialist, and a clinical epidemiologist. In 1998, he joined the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) after completing a Clinical Epidemiology Masters with the INCLEN. For more than three decades, he has been participating in perinatal medicine initiatives, strategic planning processes for the CDC, US states (Louisiana, Hawaii, Ohio, Delaware) and Latin American countries (Colombia, Guyana, Chile, Peru), and teaching methodology of research and evidence-based decision-making processes, recognized nationally and internationally.
He has been Professor of OBGYN, Genetics, Epidemiology and Law at the National University of Colombia, Emory University, Tulane School of Public Health, and the Louisiana State University. He became the Director for the CDC Maternal and Child Health Epidemiology Program in 2005. In 2008, he joined Florida International University College of Medicine as Founding Chair for the Department of Medical and Population Health Sciences Research, Assistant Vice-President for Clinical and Community Research for FIU from 2011 to 2014 and Medical Director for Roche Sequencing Solutions from 2105 until 2018.
He is currently the Director for the Khalifa University Research and Data Intelligence Support Center (R-DISC), the Chair for the Department of Epidemiology and Public Health, and the Director for Research and Development for Abu Dhabi Health Company (SEHA), in Abu Dhabi, UAE.
